Two servers,
one wider signal

HomeGrown Tones offers both a primary and an alternate scanner radio feed. The primary server sits near the Mercer/Auglaize line; the backup sits near the Auglaize/Shelby line. The dual setup is designed so listeners get consistent, reliable content across a wider geographical area.

Both feeds carry the same radio traffic, but geography and atmospheric conditions change what each one hears. The primary captures a wide range of signals; the alternate fills in coverage and picks up traffic from farther away.

Listeners may notice variations between the two scanners. Both are managed to deliver consistent updates so the community stays informed regardless of the technical hurdles that come up.

About HomeGrown Alerts

It started with a storm

2013The beginning

A routine storm chasing adventure

HomeGrown Alerts began in 2013 during a routine storm chasing adventure. Initially focused on weather reporting, the concept aimed to provide timely updates about storms and severe weather conditions to the west central Ohio community.

2020HomeGrown Tones

From weather to the whole scanner

As the passion for keeping communities informed grew, so did the vision for the platform. In 2020, HomeGrown Tones was created, expanding the mission to include not just weather alerts but also local news, current events, and a dash of entertainment.

Today, HomeGrown Alerts is dedicated to keeping residents in Mercer, Auglaize, Darke, Shelby and surrounding communities connected and engaged — offering a blend of crucial information and community spirit.

Rdio Scanner

Rdio Scanner is open source software that ingests and distributes audio files generated by various software-defined radio recorders. Its interface tries to reproduce the user experience of a real police scanner, while adding its own touch.

On your phone

Set up the app

Prefer to run it natively? Rdio Scanner is on both stores. Add both HomeGrown servers so you always have a fallback.

01

Add the primary server

Download and launch the app, open Settings, then Add a new server. Enter this in the Server URL box:

Primary https://hgnscanner.homegrownalerts.com

Tap Connect. If the server is up, the top left square turns green.

02

Add the alternate server

Repeat the same steps with the backup URL:

Alternate http://hgnscanneralt.homegrownalerts.com

Tap Connect — again, a green square means it is up.

Add both

You can add multiple servers to the Rdio Scanner app, so be sure to add both the primary and alternate servers.

03

Start scanning

Go back to the main app window and tap LIVE FEED to begin listening. Tap SELECT TG to customize your listening experience by talkgroup.
